Advice on positioning for umpires from the ECB ACO

7 May 2010
An umpire is recovering from sustaining a fractured skull when a ball thrown in by a fielder struck him on the left side of his face. This has prompted the ECB ACO to issue ECB ACO advice on positioning for umpires.

ECB ACO

Members of the national Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACUS) voted in favour of a proposal to dissolve the association and to create a new association with the England and Wales Cricket Board Officials Association (ECB OA) to be called the ECB Association of Cricket Officials. The new organisation took effect from 1 January 2008. A frequently asked questions page is available on the ECB ACO website. The latest ECB ACO newsletter (PDF document requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) was issued in March 2010.

ECB ACO training

A document posted on the ECB ACO website outlines the training courses that the ECB intend to run from May 1 2008. The document also states that for existing umpires wishing to develop their skills "each County Board in conjunction and with close consultation with their own Officials Association will create a programme for Umpire development based upon local needs".

In addition, the document states that in future "Boards and Leagues will be increasingly asked to rely on documented competency rather than certification to enable Officials to enjoy different challenges and cricketing environments". It further states that levels of accreditation (except at First Class level) "will not dictate what (in which) matches/leagues officials may officiate. Appointments will be made by on field based performance feedback from matches completed." It also describes the four ECB levels for umpires, and two levels for scorers. The document, entitled ECB ACO Training Courses, can be found on the ECB ACO website.

A copy of a presentation given by ECB ACO Education Manager Nick Cousins which was presented at a Regional Forum held at the Oval, on 10th September 2008, is now available on the ECB ACO web page.

ACUS Trust

Members of the former Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers will recall that a Trust Fund existed for 'the assistance of persons who are or have been members of The Association and their spouses, widows, widowers, children and other dependents of such persons being in need of relief because of financial hardship.' At their annual meeting earlier this year, Trustees voted unanimously to endorse the existing terms and objects of the Trust and to further those objects for the foreseeable future. For more information see the ECB ACO website.
