Forthcoming training coursesESCUSA is running a Level 1 ECB Umpiring course over two consecutive Saturdays on 6 and 13 November 2010 (9.30am to 5.30pm) at Reigate Grammar School. This course is aimed at those wishing to take the first step on the qualification ladder and learning the Laws in more detail. An optional examination follows the course. ECB ACO scorer training: Level 1 Correspondence CourseThis new course is intended to demonstrate the fundamental information needed for any scorer to progress. The two key objectives all students will need to have a comprehensive understanding of are the Laws of Cricket and how these laws affect the score sheet entries. For students to gain an understanding of the integral factors that affect scorers, Level 1 will require the student to be capable of scoring at a club or school level with confidence and efficiency. Scoring at this level will require scorers to be familiar with: The method of using a simple box-type scoring record whilst ensuring that all runs recorded can be balanced. See Tom Smith's Cricket Umpiring and Scoring, part three, page 288. The role that the scorer plays within the match and the essential duties and equipment that are necessary for any scorer to fulfil this role. All signals that are used by the umpire throughout the match and the consequential actions that are required from the scorer in response to these signals. The scoring system in terms of the runs given for different occurrences. Identifying delivery counts and knowing when the over is finished. Balancing runs achieved throughout the match both on the batting section of the scoring record and on the bowling section. The disparity between the Laws of cricket and specific regulations that are put into place. The basic understanding of all Laws relating to cricket, in particular scoring, and the impact and potential restrictions that could affect the entries within the scoring record. To complete Level 1 scorers should also have a basic knowledge of: Which umpire has control over the dismissal of a batsman under Laws 30-39? Which dismissals the bowler receives credit for? Is the dismissal possible if a no ball or wide is called? How many runs are accrued and what is the correct method of completing the scorebook? When the ball is in play and is dead and the impacts of this on the score sheet. Byes and leg byes and what is meant by them and the implications that they have on the score sheet. The meaning of a completed innings. Where there are cases of unfair play and how this may result in the award of penalty runs.To enroll on a course, you can download an application from the ECB ACO website |
Training for umpires and scorersESCUSA arranges training courses for both umpires and scorers. These are run outside the cricket season on an annual basis. In the past we ran courses led by qualified instructors under the auspices of the national Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACU&S). The ACU&S had a long history of training cricket umpires and scorers to a high standard. For the future, training will be under the control of the ECB ACO with each county looking to provide training to meet local needs. Accordingly we will be working with the Surrey Cricket Board to provide training for umpires in East Surrey. ECB ACO umpire trainingThe ECB ACO has a system of five levels through which umpires can progress. ECB Umpire Level 1This level is available to all volunteer personnel and is specifically geared to anybody who wishes to gain a good basic understanding of the fundamentals of umpiring before taking to the field. This level is open to everyone with no pre-requisites and would be suitable for all ages and abilities. ECB Umpire Level 2 This level is aimed at those individuals who are registered with member associations who wish to make a further committment to umpiring and will be involved in club cricket. It would be recommended that all umpires involved in 1st X1 and some 2nd X1 league cricket should be at least working towards this level. The content of the course will include all of the Laws of Cricket but the emphasis of the assessment will be on one day matches only. ECB Umpire Level 3 This level is aimed at those Level 2 umpires who are looking to or are already involved in matches involving counties and multiple day cricket matches. This level could be used as an update course for any Level 2 umpires who wish to update their knowledge as well as those who are keen to progress further as an umpire. ECB Umpire Level 4 For umpires who wish to progress to the professional game in England and Wales this level of accreditation must be attained. The appropriate umpires will be invited to attend the courses which will be residential and will operate in October/November as demand warrants. ECB Umpire Level 5For Umpires wishing to progress to International Level. Training for Levels 1 and 2 is expected to be provided locally under the control of the County Cricket Boards.
