Current and forthcoming courses

Our association are planning on running two courses in the forthcoming close season (see below). For further information or for registering interest in either of the courses, please contact our Training Administrator, John Smith via training@esacus.org.uk or by phone on 01372 813682.

Intermediate Umpires Course

This course will be held over the weekend of 18/19 October 2008 at Caterham School. This course is aimed at those who have passed the GL6 exam (previously administered by the ACU&S) and have some practical experience of umpiring. The course will enhance the knowledge gained at that first stage and help the umpire progress to the next level. A significant part of the Intermediate Course will deal with fieldcraft and man-management issues, essential skills for an umpire when actually officiating in a match. In this we are working closely with the Surrey Championship, who are recognising this Course and will gladly accept any umpire improving their expertise in this way onto their Umpires Panel, subject to field experience. The cost of the course is £20.

ECB ACO Level 1 Umpire Course

This course is suitable for new umpires and existing umpires who have not undertaken any previous training. It concentrates on those laws of cricket that umpires are likely to encounter whilst on the field of play. We believe that this course provides an excellent grounding for umpires and will stand them in good stead when officiating.

We use a modular approach to study with each module concentrating on the laws relating to a particular aspect of the game. There are 8 modules in total, each of a different length, with the following titles: The Umpires, The Pitch, The Ball, Substitutes & Runners, Scoring Runs, The Wicket, No Ball & LBW and Fieldcraft & Working as a Team.

There is an optional examination at the end of the course for the ECB ACO Level 1 qualification. This examination takes about 1 hour and is of a multi-choice type format.

All course members are provided with all the materials they need for the course. These include a course folder containing copies of the notes from all the presentations (but with space to add your own), and a copy of "Tom Smith's New Umpiring and Scoring". We also give you a year's membership of our Association. All you need to bring with you is a pen or pencil.

It is now essential for CRB Clearance for officiating is some leagues and competitions, and we encourage all our members to gain clearance. Whilst on the course we will supply, on request, the necessary documentation and the verification needed before submission. Currently the ECB covers the cost for Umpires applying for CRB Clearance.

We are hoping to hold the course at Caterham School which proved an excellent venue for our course last year. The two day course will take place over a weekend in February from 09.30 to 17.00 on each day with the examination on an evening within two weeks of the course. It is anticipated that the course will cost no more than £30.

Although we include membership of our Association, it does not include membership of the England & Wales Cricket Board Association of Cricket Officials (ECBACO). It is not essential to join ECBACO to take the course or to take the examination but we encourage our members to do so.

Training for umpires and scorers

ESACUS arranges training courses for both umpires and scorers. These are run outside the cricket season on an annual basis.

In the past we ran courses led by qualified instructors under the auspices of the national Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACU&S). The ACU&S had a long history of training cricket umpires and scorers to a high standard. For the future, training will be under the control of the ECB ACO with each county looking to provide training to meet local needs. Accordingly we will be working with the Surrey Cricket Board to provide training for umpires in East Surrey.

ECB ACO umpire training

The ECB ACO has a system of five levels through which umpires can progress.

ECB Umpire Level 1

This level is available to all volunteer personnel and is specifically geared to anybody who wishes to gain a good basic understanding of the fundamentals of umpiring before taking to the field. This level is open to everyone with no pre-requisites and would be suitable for all ages and abilities.

ECB Umpire Level 2

This level is aimed at those individuals who are registered with member associations who wish to make a further committment to umpiring and will be involved in club cricket. It would be recommended that all umpires involved in 1st X1 and some 2nd X1 league cricket should be at least working towards this level. The content of the course will include all of the Laws of Cricket but the emphasis of the assessment will be on one day matches only.
Pre-requisites: ECB Umpire Level 1 (Recommended but not mandatory)

ECB Umpire Level 3

This level is aimed at those Level 2 umpires who are looking to or are already involved in matches involving counties and multiple day cricket matches. This level could be used as an update course for any Level 2 umpires who wish to update their knowledge as well as those who are keen to progress further as an umpire.
Pre-requisites: ECB Umpire Level 2 and Recommendation from County Board.

ECB Umpire Level 4

For umpires who wish to progress to the professional game in England and Wales this level of accreditation must be attained. The appropriate umpires will be invited to attend the courses which will be residential and will operate in October/November as demand warrants.
Pre-requisites: ECB Umpire Level 3 and recommendation from First Class Counties or can be supported by Minor County recommendations.

ECB Umpire Level 5

For Umpires wishing to progress to International Level.

Training for Levels 1 and 2 is expected to be provided locally under the control of the County Cricket Boards.
